DIRECTIONS FOR THE 2012 SCHEDULE
NOTE: Some Parks have small entrance fees for day-use parking

Back Creek Nature Park: 7314 Edgewood Road, Annapolis
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take MD-100 EAST
  • Go 13.5 miles and take Exit 13A for Route 97 SOUTH, towards Annapolis/Bay Bridge
  • Go 13.8 miles: keep LEFT to take the US-50 EAST / US-301 NORTH exit towards Annapolis/Bay Bridge
  • In one half mile take the MD-665 exit towards Aris Allen Blvd/Riva Rd
  • Stay to the RIGHT to take MD-665 SOUTH at exit 22 toward Riva Rd
  • Go 2.7 miles and keep STRAIGHT onto Forest Drive
  • Go 2.4 miles and Forest Drive becomes Bay Ridge Road
  • Go a third of a mile and turn LEFT onto Edgewood Road. The first (West) entrance is about 1 mile down Edgewood Road; the second (East) entrance is a little further and has more parking – we’ll meet there.
Black Rock Mill: 16500 Black Rock Road, Germantown, MD
  • Take Route 29 NORTH to I-70 WEST
  • Go 19 miles on I-70W and take exit 68; stay to the left onto MD-27 SOUTH/Ridge Road
  • Go 5.8 miles and make a RIGHT onto Main St/MD-108
  • Go about a mile then make a LEFT to get back onto MD-27 SOUTH/Ridge Road
  • Go 6.5 miles then turn LEFT onto MD-355 SOUTH/Frederick Road
  • Go about a mile and make a slight RIGHT onto MD-118/Germantown Rd
  • Go 4.7 miles and turn RIGHT onto Black Rock Road. The Mill is about 2 miles down on the right
  • OR: take Route 29 SOUTH to the MD-198 exit, towards Laurel/Burtonsville
  • At the next traffic circle, take the second exit onto Old Columbia Pike
  • After about a mile, make a slight right to stay on MD-198/Old Columbia Pike
  • After about 3.5 miles, MD-198 will become MD-28/Norbeck Road
  • Go 8.2 miles and make a slight RIGHT onto East Gude Drive
  • Go 3.6 miles and make a slight RIGHT onto Key West Ave/MD-28 WEST
  • Go 8.5 miles and turn RIGHT onto Black Rock Road. The Mill is about half a mile down on the left.
Brighton Dam Azalea Gardens
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take MD-108 WEST
  • Move to the right lane as you approach the intersection with MD-32, but do not get onto MD-32
  • Immediately after passing the ramps to MD-32, go RIGHT onto Ten Oaks Rd (the right-hand lane is a right turn only lane onto Ten Oaks)
  • At the fork, bear LEFT onto Brighton Dam Road; go about 3 miles
  • Immediately after crossing the dam, turn LEFT into the parking lot of the Visitors’ Center
Brookside Gardens: 1800 Glenallen Ave., Wheaton, MD
  • Take Route 29 SOUTH and make a RIGHT onto Fairland Ave (that’s about 16 miles south of the intersection of Route 29 and Route 40 in Ellicott City)
  • Go 2.3 miles and turn RIGHT onto East Randolph Road
  • Go 2.9 miles and turn LEFT onto Heurich Road
  • Go 3-tenths of a mile; the Gardens are located where Heurich Rd ends at Glenallen Ave

Centennial Park
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take MD-108 WEST
  • From the first traffic light at Columbia Road, go 7 tenths of a mile and then turn RIGHT at the second traffic light at the entrance to Centennial Park
  • Follow the signs to the Boat Ramp Dock (make the first RIGHT and then swing LEFT down to the Boat ramp parking lot)
Clark’s Elioak Farm: 10380 Clarksville Pike (MD-108), Ellicott City, MD
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take MD-108 WEST
  • Pass through three traffic lights: the first at Columbia Road; the second at Ten Mills Road/Centennial Park; and the third at Beaverbrook/Centennial Lane.
  • The driveway entrance to Clark’s Elioak Farm is on your RIGHT; it is 1.4 miles west from the first light at Columbia Road and just one tenth a mile past the third traffic light at Beaverbrook/Centennial Lane. The entrance is marked by the mailbox with the address (10380) and by two stone pillars. Go down the driveway and park at the farm house.

Cromwell Valley Park, Willow Grove Farm
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take I-70 EAST towards Baltimore
  • Take the Baltimore Beltway / I-695 NORTH towards Towson
  • Stay on the Beltway past I-795, past both the 83s, past York, Dulaney Valley, and Providence Roads, to EXIT 29 onto Cromwell Bridge Road. Turn LEFT/NORTH at the light.
There are two entrances to the Cromwell Valley Park, both on the left: PASS THE FIRST ENTRANCE (which is Sherwood Farm). Go 4 tenths of a mile further and TAKE THE SECOND ENTRANCE, also on the LEFT, which is Willow Grove Farm. Follow the driveway over the bridge to the parking lot.

Ellicott City, Parking Lot D
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take the exit for Route 40 EAST
  • At the first light, make a RIGHT onto Rogers Avenue, heading for Historic Ellicott City
  • Turn RIGHT and follow the signs to stay on Rogers Ave and continue towards Main Street, Ellicott City OR keep LEFT onto Court House Drive and then keep RIGHT onto Ellicott Mills Drive
  • Both Rogers Ave and Ellicott Mills Drive end at Main Street:  from either road, make a LEFT onto Main Street
  • The entrance to Parking Lot D (the largest of the Ellicott City parking lots) is Hamilton Street and will be on the RIGHT just after the Post Office; park in the free spaces towards the rear of the lot
Greenbridge Area, Tridelphia Reservoir
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take MD-108 WEST
  • Move to the right lane as you approach the intersection with MD-32, but do not get onto MD-32
  • Immediately after passing the ramps to MD-32, go RIGHT onto Ten Oaks Rd (the right-hand lane is a right turn only lane onto Ten Oaks)
  • At the fork, bear LEFT onto Brighton Dam Road; go about 3 miles and cross the dam
  • Go another mile or so and at the traffic light, turn RIGHT onto New Hampshire/MD-650
  • After about ½ mile, turn RIGHT onto Green Bridge Road and follow it to the end at the boat launch parking lot
Howard County Conservancy: 10520 Old Frederick Rd, Woodstock, MD
  • Take Route 29 all the way NORTH, past all the entrance ramps to I-70, till Rt. 29 dead-ends at Old Frederick Road (MD-99)
  • Turn LEFT onto Old Frederick Road/MD-99
  • Go about 3.2 miles to the entrance to the Howard County Conservancy, on the RIGHT

Howard County Living Farm Heritage Museum: 12985 Frederick Rd, West Friendship, MD
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take the exit for Route 40 WEST
  • Counting the first light at St.John’s Lane, go west to the sixth traffic light and turn LEFT onto Frederick Road/MD-144 WEST (do not turn at the fifth light: it says Frederick Rd, but it puts you onto Frederick Rd heading back East)
  • Go about 4.9 miles to the entrance to the Howard County Living Farm Heritage Museum, on the LEFT (it’s not too far after you cross MD-32)

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens: 1550 Anacostia Ave NE, Washington DC
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take MD-100 EAST
  • Pass the exits for I-95 and Route 1 and then go SOUTH on I-295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway)
  • Take the Eastern Avenue exit.  At the top of the ramp, go STRAIGHT through the light, down the service road. Kenilworth Avenue should be on your left, and apartments on the right
  • Go down two streets and make a RIGHT onto Douglas Street
  • At the end of Douglas Street, make a RIGHT onto Anacostia Avenue.  The park is about a block and a half up from there on the LEFT
  • If you miss the exit, take the next one and take the first RIGHT.  At the end of the street make another RIGHT, and continue to the park entrance

Lake Elkhorn, Columbia
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take Exit 18 onto Broken Land Parkway heading EAST
  • Pass the first (North) Cradlerock Way and turn LEFT onto the second (SOUTH) Cradlerock Way
  • Pass Broken Staff on the right and then turn RIGHT onto Dockside Lane
  • Follow that to the parking lot at the Lake
Lake Kittamaqundi, Columbia
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take Exit 20B towards the Town Center
  • Keep LEFT to stay on Little Patuxent Parkway where it splits with Governor Warfield Parkway
  • Follow Little Patuxent Parkway past Sterrett Place and Wincopin Circle; turn LEFT at the traffic light just before Little Patuxent Parkway swings to the right at the Library (there’s an entrance to Columbia Mall on your right)
  • Follow that road down to the lower parking lot by the Rouse Building and next to the Lake
Patapsco Valley State Park, Avalon/Orange Area
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take MD-100 EAST
  • Take Exit 6 off MD-100 to go NORTH on Route 1
  • Follow Rt. 1 North till it goes under I-895 and crosses the Patapsco River
  • Then turn LEFT onto South Street (there’s a big facility on the south corner with a sign that says “Vehicles for Change”)
  • Make an immediate LEFT into the Park
  • Stop at the Honor System box, take an envelope, put $2 in, detach the parking permit from the top, put envelope in box, put parking permit on your rear-view mirror
  • Continue about 1 mile to a stop sign at Gunn Road; go RIGHT and then RIGHT again into the Avalon Visitors’ Center parking lot
Patapsco Valley State Park, Daniels Area
  • Take Route 29 all the way NORTH, past all the entrance ramps to I-70, till Rt. 29 dead-ends at MD-99/Rogers Ave
  • Turn RIGHT onto Rogers Avenue
  • Proceed a little over ½ mile to traffic circle; go LEFT onto Old Frederick Road (that’s ¾ of the way around the circle)
  • Go about ½ mile and then turn LEFT onto Daniels Road
  • Follow Daniels all the way to the end (about 1 mile) to largest parking lot on the RIGHT
Patapsco Valley State Park, Pickall Area
  • Take Route 29 all the way NORTH, past all the entrance ramps to I-70, till Rt. 29 dead-ends at MD-99/Rogers Ave
  • Turn RIGHT onto Rogers Avenue
  • Proceed a little over ½ mile to traffic circle; go LEFT onto Old Frederick Road (that’s ¾ of the way around the circle)
  • Follow Old Frederick Road past Daniels Road, down and across the Patapsco River
  • Immediately after crossing the river, turn RIGHT onto Johnnycake Road
  • The park entrance is to your immediate RIGHT
Patuxent Wildlife Refuge: 10901 Scarlet Tanager Loop, Laurel
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take MD-100 EAST
  • Pass the exits for I-95 and Route 1 and then go SOUTH on I-295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway)
  • Follow I-295 SOUTH to the exit for Powder Mill Rd: go LEFT (EAST) on Powder Mill Road
  • Go 1.7 miles and turn RIGHT onto Scarlet Tanager Loop; we’ll meet in the Visitor Center parking lot (1.4 miles down the Loop)

River Hill Garden Center: 12165 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, MD
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take MD-108 WEST
  • Go about 6 miles to the River Hill Garden Center, on the left
  • OR if you’re coming up Rt 29 from the south, you can take MD-32 WEST to exit 20/ MD-108 EAST, towards Clarksville. Then the Garden Center is about half a mile along MD-108, on the left.
  • Please park at either end of the parking lot, out of the way of the primary customer parking areas.
Scott’s Cove, Rocky Gorge Reservoir
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take MD-216 EAST towards Laurel
  • Go RIGHT onto Crest Road
  • Go LEFT onto Scaggsville Road
  • Go RIGHT onto Pineway Road
  • Go RIGHT onto Harding Road
  • Parking lot is on the LEFT
Town of Oella: 425 Oella Ave., Catonsville, MD
(These directions will take you a longer way, but it’s less confusing)
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take the exit for Route 40 EAST
  • At the first light, make a RIGHT onto Rogers Avenue, heading for Historic Ellicott City
  • Turn RIGHT and follow the signs to stay on Rogers Ave and continue towards Main Street, Ellicott City
  • Rogers Ave ends at Main Street: make a LEFT onto Main Street
  • Follow Main Street going EAST through downtown Ellicott City
  • As soon as you cross the Patapsco River, you’ll pass Oella Ave on the left and then make the immediate LEFT onto Westchester Ave
  • Follow Westchester until it intersects with Oella; at that intersection is the Country Corner Store; park in the lot next to the store

Tridelphia Area, Tridelphia Reservoir
  • From Columbia / Route 29, take MD-108 WEST
  • Move to the right lane as you approach the intersection with MD-32, but do not get onto MD-32
  • Immediately after passing the ramps to MD-32, go RIGHT onto Ten Oaks Rd (the right-hand lane is a right turn only lane onto Ten Oaks)
  • At the fork, bear LEFT onto Brighton Dam Road; go about 3 miles and cross the dam
  • Go another mile or so and at the traffic light, turn RIGHT onto New Hampshire/MD-650
  • Pass the turn for Green Bridge Road and swing LEFT to continue on MD-650 for another 2 and ½ miles or so
  • Turn RIGHT onto Georgia/MD-97 NORTH
  • After about ½ mile, turn RIGHT onto Tridelphia Lake Road (there’s a small brown sign at the turn that says “Tridelphia Rec. Area”)
  • Follow that to its end at the boat launch parking lot
Woodlawn Manor: 16501 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring, MD
  • Take Columbia / Route 29 south to the MD-198 exit, towards Laurel/Burtonsville
  • At the next traffic circle, take the second exit onto Old Columbia Pike
  • After about a mile, make a slight right to stay on MD-198/Old Columbia Pike
  • After about 3.5 miles, MD-198 will become MD-28/Norbeck Road
  • Go another 1.8 miles and turn right onto Norwood Road
  • The entrance to Woodlawn Manor is about .8 miles further, on the right. Be sure to park on the Manor property, not on the adjacent police grounds.
  • NOTE: The Manor will be closed, so there will not be access to the restrooms there. The closest restroom appears to be at the Olney Ale House, about 1.4 miles north up MD-182/Dr.Bird Rd/Norwood Rd.

Cylburn Arboretum: 4915 Greenspring Avenue, Baltimore

• Keep to the LEFT to get onto I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) NORTH towards Towson (don’t go too far left, though, or you’ll end up in the Security Park & Ride!)
• Go about 3 miles and take Exit 18A; stay to the RIGHT for Rt 26 EAST (Liberty Road)
• Go about 2 miles and take a LEFT onto Northern Parkway
• Go about 3.3 miles and take a RIGHT onto Greenspring Avenue; the entrance will be on your LEFT in about a third of a mile.
• For access to the mansion and gardens, pass the welcome center parking lots and continue up to the parking lot near the greenhouses, from where you can walk to the mansion.

Eagle Cove School, 5191 Mountain Rd (MD Route 177E), Pasadena
• Take Route 100 EAST as far as you can, to the end (follow signs to Gibson Island)
• Where Route 100 EAST ends, you’ll take MD Route 177 EAST (Mountain Road) towards Gibson Island
• 1 mile after the light at Long Point Road, you’ll need to swing RIGHT to stay on MD 177E/Mountain Road
• Continue on MD 177E/Mountain Road until it ends at the causeway to Gibson Island: Eagle Cove School is the last set of buildings on the right, just before the gate at the causeway

• From Columbia / Route 29, take Route 100 EAST
• Pass the exits for I-95 and Route 1 and then go SOUTH on Route 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway)
• Take the Eastern Avenue exit. At the top of the ramp, go STRAIGHT through the light, down the service road. Kenilworth Avenue should be on your left, and apartments on the right
• Go down two streets and make a RIGHT onto Douglas Street
• At the end of Douglas Street, make a RIGHT onto Anacostia Avenue. The park is about a block and a half up from there on the LEFT
• If you miss the exit, take the next one and take the first RIGHT. At the end of the street make another RIGHT, and continue to the park entrance

• From Columbia / Route 29, take Exit 18 onto Broken Land Parkway heading EAST
• Pass the first (North) Cradlerock Way and turn LEFT onto the second (SOUTH) Cradlerock Way
• Pass Broken Staff on the right and then turn RIGHT onto Dockside Lane
• Follow that to the parking lot at the Lake

Lake Kittamaqundi, Columbia
• From Columbia / Route 29, take Exit 20B towards the Town Center
• Keep LEFT to stay on Little Patuxent Parkway where it splits with Governor Warfield Parkway
• Follow Little Patuxent Parkway past Sterrett Place and Wincopin Circle; turn LEFT at the traffic light just before Little Patuxent Parkway swings to the right at the Library (there’s an entrance to Columbia Mall on your right)
• Follow that road down to the lower parking lot by the Rouse Building and next to the Lake

Patapsco Valley State Park, Avalon/Orange Area
• From Columbia / Route 29, take Route 100 EAST
• Take Exit 6 off Rt 100 to go NORTH on Route 1
• Follow Rt. 1 North till it goes under US 895 and crosses the Patapsco River
• Then turn LEFT onto South Street (there’s a big facility on the south corner with a sign that says “Vehicles for Change”)
• Make an immediate LEFT into the Park
• Stop at the Honor System box, take an envelope, put $2 in, detach the parking permit from the top, put envelope in box, put parking permit on your rear-view mirror
• Continue about 1 mile to a stop sign at Gunn Road; go RIGHT and then RIGHT again into the Avalon Visitors’ Center parking lot

Patapsco Valley State Park, Daniels Area
• Take Route 29 all the way NORTH, past all the entrance ramps to I-70, till Rt. 29 dead-ends at Route 99/Rogers Ave
• Turn RIGHT onto Rogers Avenue
• Proceed a little over ½ mile to traffic circle; go LEFT onto Old Frederick Road (that’s ¾ of the way around the circle)
• Go about ½ mile and then turn LEFT onto Daniels Road
• Follow Daniels all the way to the end (about 1 mile) to largest parking lot on the RIGHT

• From Columbia / Route 29, take Route 100 EAST
• Pass the exits for I-95 and Route 1 and then go SOUTH on Route 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway)

• Go 1.7 miles and turn RIGHT onto Scarlet Tanager Loop; we’ll meet in the Visitor Center parking lot (1.4 miles down the Loop)

(These directions will take you a longer way, but it’s less confusing)

• At the first light, make a RIGHT onto Rogers Avenue, heading for Historic Ellicott City
• Turn RIGHT and follow the signs to stay on Rogers Ave and continue towards Main Street, Ellicott City
• Rogers Ave ends at Main Street: make a LEFT onto Main Street
• Follow Main Street going EAST through downtown Ellicott City
• As soon as you cross the Patapsco River, you’ll pass Oella Ave on the left and then make the immediate LEFT onto Westchester Ave
• Follow Westchester until it intersects with Oella; at that intersection is the Country Corner Store; park in the lot next to the store

Brighton Dam Azalea Gardens
From Columbia / Route 29, take Route 108 WEST
Move to the right lane as you approach the intersection with Rt. 32, but do not get onto Rt. 32
Immediately after passing the ramps to Rt. 32, go RIGHT onto Ten Oaks Rd (the right-hand lane is a right turn only lane onto Ten Oaks)
At the fork, bear LEFT onto Brighton Dam Road; go about 3 miles
Immediately after crossing the dam, turn LEFT into the parking lot of the Visitors’ Center

Brookside Gardens: 1800 Glenallen Ave., Wheaton, MD
Take Route 29 SOUTH and make a RIGHT onto Fairland Ave (that’s about 16 miles south of the intersection of Route 29 and Route 40 in Ellicott City)
Go 2.3 miles and turn RIGHT onto East Randolph Road
Go 2.9 miles and turn LEFT onto Heurich Road
Go 3-tenths of a mile; the Gardens are located where Heurich Rd ends at Glenallen Ave

Brown’s Bridge
From Columbia / Route 29, take Route 216 WEST towards Fulton (3rd exit of traffic circle)
Go about 3 miles on 216 heading west and make a LEFT on Browns Bridge Rd
Follow Browns Bridge Rd down to the reservoir and park on the NORTH side of the bridge, where we’ll meet (don’t cross the bridge)

C&O Canal, Riley’s Lock (Lock #24)
Take Route 29 NORTH; stay to the LEFT as you pass the split for I-70 East and continue on 29 North to the ramps to I-70 WEST (there are two ramps to I-70 West, one on each side of 29; you can use either of them); get onto I-70 WEST
Follow I-70 WEST for about 19 miles and take the exit for Route 27 SOUTH
Follow 27 SOUTH for about 10 miles and make a RIGHT on Brink Road
A half mile later Brink Road merges briefly with Rt 355 (Rockville Pike) for about a quarter mile, then you take a LEFT onto Old Baltimore Road West
Follow Old Baltimore Road West for about 2 and a half miles, then turn LEFT onto Rt 121 (Clarksburg Road)
Follow 121 south across Little Seneca Lake; pass Rt 117 on the right, go under the railroad bridge, and take the next RIGHT onto White Ground Road (it may be called Clopper Road until it swings south again)
Follow White Ground Road south for about 4 and a quarter miles, then take a little jog LEFT on 28 (Darnestown Rd) and immediately RIGHT again onto Sugarland Road
Follow Sugarland Road south about 1 and a quarter miles and make a LEFT onto Montevideo Road
Continue south on Montevideo Road for a little over 2 miles until it dead-ends at River Road: go LEFT
Follow River Road for a quarter mile and right after you cross Seneca Creek turn RIGHT onto Riley’s Lock Road; follow it down to the parking lot at Riley’s Lock.

Centennial Park
From Columbia / Route 29, take Route 108 WEST
From the first traffic light at Columbia Road, go 7 tenths of a mile and then turn RIGHT at the second traffic light at the entrance to Centennial Park
Follow the signs to the Boat Ramp Dock (make the first RIGHT and then swing LEFT down to the Boat ramp parking lot)

Clark’s Elioak Farm: 10380 Clarksville Pike (Route 108), Ellicott City, MD
From Columbia / Route 29, take Route 108 WEST
Pass through three traffic lights: the first at Columbia Road; the second at Ten Mills Road/Centennial Park; and the third at Beaverbrook/Centennial Lane.
The driveway entrance to Clark’s Elioak Farm is on your RIGHT; it is 1.4 miles west from the first light at Columbia Road and just one tenth a mile past the third traffic light at Beaverbrook/Centennial Lane. The entrance is marked by the mailbox with the address (10380) and by two stone pillars. Go down the driveway and park at the farm house complex.

Keep to the LEFT to get onto I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) NORTH towards Towson (don’t go too far left, though, or you’ll end up in the Security Park & Ride!)
Go about 3 miles and take Exit 18A; stay to the RIGHT for Rt 26 EAST (Liberty Road)
Go about 2 miles and take a LEFT onto Northern Parkway
Go about 3.3 miles and take a RIGHT onto Greenspring Avenue; the entrance will be on your LEFT in about a third of a mile.

Great Falls Park: 9200 Old Dominion Dr., McLean, VA
From Columbia / Route 29, take Route 100 EAST
Take Exit 5A onto I-95 SOUTH
As you near the Capital Beltway, stay in the RIGHT-hand lanes to merge onto I-495 NORTH toward Silver Spring (Exit 27)
As you near I-270, stay in the LEFT-hands lanes to remain on I-495 NORTH
Get into the RIGHT-hand lane as you cross the American Legion Bridge into Virginia and then take Exit 43-44 for Georgetown Pike/Rt 193
Follow the signs for Great Falls Park and merge onto Rt 193 heading WEST
Go about 3.6 miles and turn right into the Park entrance

From Columbia / Route 29, take the exit for Route 40 WEST
Counting the first light at St.John’s Lane, go west to the sixth traffic light and turn LEFT onto Frederick Road / Route 144 WEST (do not turn at the fifth light: it says Frederick Rd, but it puts you onto Frederick Rd heading back East)
